CMP Global chain?

Postby buchhla » Fri Feb 12, 2010 4:32 pm

Does anyone have any experiance with this companies product?
http://www.cmpglobal.com/content/products_services/marine-products/default-chain.htm#G43

I am replacing the 60' of 3/8 I have on my boat which I have been using for local PNW cruising with 200-250' of 5/16 HT chain in preparation for cruising down the coast and spending some time in the South Pacific. I have a Wauquiez Pretorien 35, so that is about the maximum amount of chain I can practically carry for weight consideration and from what I have read should be okay for my purposes. I will have another 250' of plaited anchor line in addition plus smaller lines for the other anchors.

My main question is what is the quality of this chain? I can get it locally for about 30% less than ACCO, which I know is good. I would like to save the money if possible, but anchor chain is not an area I want to go cheap on if I will get an inferior product!

Thanks!

Try http://www.1st-chainsupply.com for a price on the 5/16HT Acco chain, you are looking for 1/2 drum=275 feet. I think Defender also may have 1/2 drums on sale now to.
If you have it delivered to a commercial address youy can save on extra delivery charges that add up quickly. Be sure to buy ALLOY shackles, standard galvanized shakles for this size chain have a much lower working load than the chain does

CMP Chain is junk! I bought 300 feet of 5/16th HT chain from a dealer in Fort Lauderdale and the galvanizing started to peel off after only 6 weeks. When I contacted the dealer, I was given a song and dance about CMP trying a new mechanical galvanizing procedure that didn't work very well. They are supposedly willing to replace the product under warranty, but I have been struggling for months to get them to pony up.

Caveat Emptor. I am still trying to get the distributor to honour a warranty claim and replace the chain with a proper hot dipped galvanized chain, but I am getting a serious run around. I will not head to the Caribbean this spring with this junk in my anchor locker, so I may have to bite the bullet and buy ACCO again, which is what I should have done in the first place. Somewhere in the Keys there will be a new artificial reef surrounding a small pile of junk chain because I cannot in good conscience sell this stuff to anybody else.

Good to know! I figured it was too good to be true, but I was hoping since it was a Canadian base company, who most likely is manyfacturing in China, their quality control would be okay. Guess it is ACCO for me, unless anyone else has good options. I can get the ACCO G4 stuff locally for only about $.30 more a foot compared to 1st chain, so not having to deal with shipping to a commercial address and keeping the business local works for me...

Thanks!

I had a very different experience with this company... I purchased CMP Global chain in Fort Lauderdale as well (probably from the same guy). I had a problem with it about 4 weeks later then went back to the place I bought it from. It was a disaster... absolutely no interest in helping me. After weeks of fighting with them I decided to contact the manufacturer in Canada. They told me that they were new in the chain business. Their intention is to offer a top quality chain similar to anodes they build as well ("Martyr" I think its called). Anyway, they were pretty honest and explained they initially had challenges with the galvanizing as you guys reported. Last year they claimed to fix the problem. Not only that but they sent me a full barrel of 3/8" chain to Ft. Lauderdale to replace of their new stuff to replace the bad one. It's now all Hot Dipped Galvanized, looks perfect and fits as it should. I had to admit I was pretty pissed when I called them but finally I found a manufacturer that backed up their products and looked after the boaters... what a concept. I just heard that CMP chain is now approved for use by one of the big windlass companies... not sure which one.

Keep 'er afloat t'ill daylight!

Check West Marine for Acco Chain. Their price for a half drum of 3/8" BBB was the same as Defender but it included shipping to the nearest WM store while Defender's shipping cost, by truck, was almost as much as the cost of the chain. At the WM store we pulled up to their shipping door and loaded the chain a few feet at a time into the truck.

Don't know if you will have better luck with ACCO. Our 5/16" G4 rusted out in 6 months and at 18 months now is flaking sheet rust and no longer fits the gypsy properly. Yes, it was genuine ACCO bought from one of the most reputable places in the US. I have met 3 others, and know of 2 more, with the same problem with the same chain bought from different places.

There was a story in the local boating rag in the Caribe here about someone buying CMP chain from a dealer in Ft. Lauderdale and having it rust immediately. When they contacted CMP about it, they were told that the dealer was buying 2nd market chain lots that CMP refused due to quality issues. CMP came through for them and replaced it, even though they didn't sell it to the dealer.

This is all really intersting. I ended up going with ACCO for my primary 325' that I use, and just bought some CMP for 2 smaller anchors and a small pice for my dinghy anchor. From looking at both, the ACCO chain 'looks' nicer as far as the galvanizing goes, but the CMP does not look bad to my eyes. I do know that this is pretty fresh chain from the place that I bought it as they were recently out of stock, and I am pretty sure that they buy direct.

Anyway, in my mind the extra money was definitely worth it for the primary chain...

I just got my 5/16 Ht from Seco South. Great price and service and works like a champ in my S/L hyspeed windlass. By the way, I think Lewmar now owns Seco South. Here's a link. I have no affiliation with them other than being a satisfied customer for many years now.
